India’s squad for the ODI Series against South Africa has been announced on Friday, December 31, 2021. Ruturaj Gaikwad has been selected for India’s ODI squad and is likely to make his ODI debut. Venkatesh Iyer also received his first call-in for ODI and is expected to play the role of a versatile who can beat six. Ravi Ashwin returned to the Indian ODI team after the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.
Shikhar Dhawan is in the squad after all the speculation surrounding his recent form. Mohammed shami was rested and Ravindra Jadeja was also unavailable due to her injury. Head coach Chetan Sharma has said there are players whose names have also been considered for selection but will have to wait until their break in international cricket.
Rishi Dhawan played three ODIs and one T20I for India. He made his international debut at the MCG in 2016. A native of Himachal Pradesh, he is a versatile fast bowler, which is quite rare in South Asian countries. He was also captain of the Himachal Pradesh squad in the 2021 Vijay Hazare Trophy and helped the national team win the title.
At the 2021 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he scored 458 points in 8 games with an average of 76.33 including five fifty. His highest score in the tournament was 91 *. He was the second leading scorer in the tournament. He was also second in the list of top wicket-takers, picking 17 wickets in that tournament. He was in both charts, which in itself is quite extraordinary.
He’s been incredibly brilliant in this tournament. He wasn’t so eye-catching when he got to wear the Indian team jersey, but his great form can come in handy for the team in the upcoming series. With Hardik pandya not in the squad, he might have been a good option to invest in.
