Chelsea book their place in the Continental Cup final with a 3-1 win over Man Utd

Chelsea booked their place in the Conti Cup final with a 3-1 win over Manchester United on Wednesday.

Emma Hayes’ Blues have won this competition twice in a row and showed that quality to see a spirited united side that gave Chelsea a game, but ultimately succumbed to the immense quality of the reigning WSL champions.

Deadly Pernille Harder opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a stunning solo goal, before Jessie Fleming’s looping header put the hosts ahead 2-0 five minutes later.

United responded well and Vilde Boe Risa pulled them back into the draw almost immediately. Jackie Groenen’s sumptuous backheel tore through the Chelsea defense and Risa made no mistakes from a tight angle.

The goal gave the Red Devils a boost, but Chelsea slew their opponents with deadly precision before the break. Jess Carter made a dazzling run into the box and was spotted perfectly by the dominant Guro Reiten, whose ball just needed to be headed into the back of the net in the 39th minute.

Chelsea controlled the game perfectly after the break and even finished the game with an extra player. United goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley was dismissed with ten minutes remaining for dragging Sam Kerr out of the box.

There were few positives for United, although new signing Signe Bruun made his debut as a second-half substitute.

As for Chelsea, they will have their eye on Thursday’s semi-final between Manchester City and Tottenham, with a place in the final on March 5 down the line.
