It is available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. If you’re looking for an affordable auto insurance policy and are comfortable managing your own accounts online when an agent isn’t nearby, Geico may be right for you.

In addition to the typical auto insurance coverage choices, Geico offers:
- Mechanical breakdown cover. This covers repairs to all mechanical parts of a new car, less than 15 months old and less than 15,000 miles, except problems caused by wear and tear. There is a $ 250 deductible. Mechanical breakdown coverage is renewable for up to seven years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first, and does not pay for regular maintenance such as tuneups.
- Carpool insurance. If you’re driving for a rideshare company like Uber or Lyft, or a delivery service like Instacart or GrubHub, this option allows you to have a policy that covers both personal use and ridesharing. You can replace your existing auto policy with this hybrid carpool-only insurance. Geico carpooling insurance is available in 40 states and the District of Columbia.
Geico auto insurance discounts
Geico has a long list of auto insurance discounts, so there’s a good chance you can find a price cut that applies to you. Although details vary by state, you may qualify for discounts for:
- Have safety equipment such as air bags, anti-lock brakes, daytime running lights or an anti-theft system.
- Own a new vehicle three years or older.
- Drive five years without an accident.
- Use of seat belts.
- Take a defensive driving course or driver training for a young driver.
- Get good grades, if you or a member of your policy is a full-time student between the ages of 16 and 24.
- Participate in an emergency deployment with the United States Army.
- Be a member of active or retired military service or a member of the National Guard or Reserves.
- Be an active or retired federal employee.
- Insure more than one vehicle with Geico.
- Purchase of an owner, tenant, condo or mobile home policy through Geico.
- Be a member of organizations such as alumni associations or sports groups.
If you live in Connecticut, Illinois, Oregon, Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin, Geico can also offer you a discount for tracking your driving through your phone. The DriveEasy app measures habits such as speeding, braking hard and using your phone while driving. For the price reduction to apply, all drivers listed on your policy must participate.

Geico has received fewer complaints than expected from regulators relative to its size for auto insurance, according to three years of data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
In a 2020 JD Power study on customer satisfaction with auto insurance purchases, Geico ranked as the # 1 major insurer, but scored below average for satisfaction with auto insurance claims.

METHODOLOGY OF THE INSURER’S COMPLAINTS
NerdWallet reviewed complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2018-2020. To assess how insurers stack up against each other, the NAIC annually calculates a complaints index for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its size, or the share of total premiums in the industry. To assess a company’s complaint history, NerdWallet calculated a similar index for each insurer, weighted by each subsidiary’s market share, over the three-year period. The ratios are determined separately for auto, home (including renters and condominiums) and life insurance.
