Leopard who mutilated a 4 year old girl in Budgam captured; the family is worried

Srinagar, June 15 (PTI) The Forestry Department claimed on Tuesday it captured a leopard that mutilated four-year-old Adda Mir earlier this month on the outskirts of town, officials said here.

Senior Wildlife Department official Rashid Naqash said the captured leopard was the same one that killed Adda after he plucked it from the lawn of his home at the Ompora settlement 11 days ago. .

Officials said the teams tracked the pug marks of the cat, which weighs around 80 kilograms.

However, the family and residents of Ompura locality in Budgam district questioned the claim and said while the pug marks had not even been taken, how could they have concluded that it was the same leopard.

The animal was captured in a nursery at the Budgam deputy commissioner office complex, two miles from where the incident took place on June 3, they said. The leopard was spotted near the resort a few days ago.

Family members, including Adda’s father, Muddasir, said he accompanied forest and wildlife staff on their visits and that there was no forensic team with him. them.

“Now I’m wondering where they got and matched the pug marks from,” he said.

A sobbing Muddasir said he did not want another child in the area to be mutilated by the leopard and asked authorities to make sure there were no more animals in the locality, which counts a colony of government housing, three villages and a few colleges.

“I don’t want to see any parent suffer the way we are,” he said and called on authorities to be safe and not to comment just to ease the growing pressure on them. “After all, it’s a matter of human life,” he said.

Muddassir, along with others in the locality, said five leopards were spotted in March this year on CCTV in the area. “Isn’t this a cause for concern for all the people living in the region,” asked another resident of Aijaz.

The tragic death of Adda, who was called ‘Adda Rani’, rocked the Kashmir valley as it highlighted the human-animal conflict due to the rapid destruction of forests.

Adda, dressed in her favorite ‘Barbie dress’, was mutilated by the leopard as she prepared for the cake-cutting ceremony for her seven-year-old brother, Ali.

However, the June 3 celebration came to a screeching halt when her heartbreaking screams pierced the silent evening.

The next day, Adda’s body parts were collected from an adjacent nursery turned into a forest, leaving a grieving family behind. PTI MIJ SKL AAR
