Newman’s Catholic Boys Basketball uses strong start to overtake first place in marathon

WAUSAU – Wausau Newman Catholic scored 48 points in the first half to build a big lead and was able to hold on from there by beating first-place finisher Marathon 80-69 in a men’s basketball game at the Marawood Conference South Division on Friday at Newman Catholic High School.

Isaac Seidel scored 30 points and Mason Prey added 29 for Newman, who is now 16-6 overall and 11-4 in the Marawood South.

The Cardinals’ victory also puts Marathon (18-4, 13-2 Marawood South) tied for the top of the conference standings with Stratford.

Grant Warren had 22 points and Jaden Koeller scored 17 for Marathon.

Newman Catholic will play a non-conference game at Wabeno on Monday before wrapping up its Marawood South and regular season schedule at home to Stratford on Thursday.
