NIU goes to first place in Toledo on Wednesday

DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women’s basketball team puts its three-game winning streak on the line Wednesday night when it travels to face the Toledo Rockets at Savage Arena. The tip-off is at 6 p.m. with the match broadcast on ESPN3.
NIU (13-13, 10-8 MAC) shot 68% from the field in the second half of Saturday’s 77-72 victory at Ball State, erasing a five-point halftime deficit. The Huskies outscored the Cardinals 29-12 in the third quarter, shooting more than 70 percent from the field. A’Jah Davis (DeKalb, IL/Montverde Academy [Fla.]) led all players with 23 points and 13 rebounds in the win, her 10and double-double and 21st of the season. Over the past 10 games, Davis has averaged 17.3 points and 12.6 rebounds per game. She is third in the nation in double-doubles and fifth in rebounding at 12.0 per game.
The Huskies are averaging 74.0 points per game during their current three-game winning streak, averaging 10.0 points per game. NIU also had a +7.7 rebound margin in that streak. The Huskies have won five of their last seven games to climb to fourth in the Mid-American Conference at 10-8 with two games left in the regular season. The top eight teams qualify for next week’s MAC Championship in Cleveland. NIU is a half game over Ball State and a full game over Kent State, Western Michigan, Bowling Green and Ohio who are all tied for sixth.
Toledo (23-4, 17-1 MAC) captured the MAC regular season championship last Saturday in a 75-51 victory at Eastern Michigan. The Rockets shot 43.9 percent from the field in their ninth straight win, keeping the Eagles 31 percent from the field and just 5-for-18 from the three-point line. Junior forward Quinesha Lockett led all players with 16 points, adding seven rebounds. Lockett is eighth in the MAC with 17.8 points per game. Toledo leads the MAC in scoring defense at just 59.9 points per game, as well as defense in field goal percentage at 36.2%.
