Ivy Kitchen + Cocktails, located just down the street at 9215 E. Jefferson, Detroit, offers diners a luxury dining experience while seated on plush blue velor seats.

The kitchen offers a varied all-American menu prepared by chef Jon Peterson, who was recently invited to appear on the Food Network’s Beat Bobby Flay show. Top dishes include salmon with sesame and ginger, burgers, and brunches, the latter being served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Owner Nya Marshall said a menu staple is Thai sweet chili chicken, a locally sourced dish that’s brined for 48 hours.

“We’re a locally sourced, sustainable restaurant,” Marshall said, “and that means most of our produce and protein is literally sourced from local farms. We also use one of the… urban farms in town.

She added that the restaurant composts all waste and recycles it when possible.

Besides the food, the restaurant also offers a diverse list of craft cocktails. Marshall’s staple is a Detroit Old Fashioned, the kitchen’s version of a smoky Detroit-style Old Fashioned. Mocktails made with fresh ingredients are also available to customers, with the Rosemary Blueberry Smash being one of the most popular.

Happy hour at the restaurant offers an $8 menu from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

Entering the last quarter of 2019, Ivy Kitchen was hit by the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, like most other businesses. Taking advantage of the space, Marshall installed a heated patio in front of the building — something that gets crowded on weekends even in the dead of winter.

The restaurant can accommodate 86 customers at a time. Marshall said that while reservations aren’t required, they are recommended.

Marshall encouraged Grosse Pointers to venture to Detroit and see what the neighborhood business has to offer.

“It’s just a place where you feel good, where the food is quality and where you feel a bit like home,” she said.

Ivy Kitchen + Cocktails is open 4 p.m. to midnight Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.
